From Our Garden to Your Nursery: Why We Root Our Mother & Baby Line in Herbal Wisdom
We at Urban Abundance believe that the transition into motherhood—and a baby’s first steps into the world—should be held in the gentlest hands possible. When we formulated our Mother & Baby collection, we didn’t have to look very far for answers. We looked to the herbs that we grow and that Mother Nature provides.
.
That moment you see a bright red diaper rash or feel the sting of cracked skin during those early nursing days. Our mission is to provide some comfort through our products, ensuring that if it touches your baby’s velvet-soft skin, it is pure, potent, recognizable and without any frangrances or essential oils in any baby products.
Beyond being pure, there is a deep, intentional reason why we chose specific herbs that we infuse into these products, to help heal and protect.
If you look at the labels of our Tallow Diaper Cream, Baby Butter, Nipple Cream, Cradle Cap Oil and Stretch Mark Serum, you’ll find a symphony of botanicals like Calendula, Plantain, Bergamot Leaf, Lavender, Chamomile, Yarrow, and Marshmallow Root. We don't use these just for their scent; we use them because they are biological powerhouses for skin regeneration.
Each herb in our formulas serves a specific, healing purpose for both baby and mom:
Calendula (The Gentle Protector): Often called Pot Marigold, it is naturally antimicrobial and stimulates collagen production, helping skin knit itself back together—essential for both diaper rashes and postpartum recovery.
Plantain (Nature’s Bandage): Rich in allantoin, this herb promotes rapid cell growth. It acts as a soothing, invisible barrier that pulls heat and inflammation out of the skin, making it perfect for angry, red irritations.
Bergamot Leaf (The Purifier): Beyond its uplifting scent, Bergamot Leaf has natural antiseptic properties. It helps keep skin clean and balanced, which is vital for maintaining a healthy skin barrier on a baby’s sensitive bottom.
Lavender (The Soother): Known for its calming aroma, Lavender is also a powerhouse for skin tissue repair. It helps reduce redness and provides a cooling sensation to itchy or tight skin.
Chamomile (The Peace-Maker): This herb is incredibly high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. It is specifically chosen for its ability to soothe the delicate, thin skin of newborns and helps to calm sensitivities.
Yarrow (The Healer): Yarrow is one of nature’s best vulneraries, meaning it excels at healing wounds. It helps to tighten the skin and reduce redness, making it a key player in our serums for stretch marks and healing skin.
Marshmallow Root (The Cooling Shield): This root contains a high level of mucilage, a slippery substance that creates a protective layer. As a demulcent, it traps moisture in and keeps irritants out—the ultimate relief for nursing mamas and dry cradle cap.
Why It Matters
A baby’s skin is up to 30% thinner than an adult's. This means that anything applied topically is quickly absorbed into their system. By using whole, infused herbs instead of synthetic fragrances or petroleum-based fillers, we aren't just covering up a symptom. We are feeding the skin the literal nutrients it needs to repair itself.
We invite you to explore our Mother & Baby collection. From our garden to your home, we are honored to be a part of your family’s wellness journey.
